Description of a Slave Ship is one of Gwylym’s reveal artworks. The document used in this artwork is a real historical document copied and reproduced from the original engraving. The trans-Atlantic slave trade was one of the most dehumanizing things that humans have done to other humans.
Transporting of the slaves was particularly terrible, but much of the public had no clue just how bad the conditions were. Over 10,000 copies were distributed in under a year and this gave people a visual sense of the awful circumstances that slaves were forced to go through, which gave strong support to the antislavery movement that was eventually abolished soon after.
Slavery still takes place in many parts of the world and the artist is drawing attention to the fact that this is a problem of humanity that involves everyone. As Governments grow bigger and more powerful the potential for cycles to repeat are amplified. Lest us not forget and keep guard against the more subtle forms of slavery.
